In order to assess the supply-side concentration across industries, the Monopolies Commission relies on two distinct indicators that find widespread use by researchers and competition agencies. The Herfindahl-Hirschman-Index (HHI) serves as an indicator of the overall level of concentration within industries. The concentration ratio focuses only on the aggregate turnover shares of the largest firms within each industry and may be used to assess the risk of oligopolies. The Federal Statistical Office prepares this dataset every two years for the Monopolies Commission to use in its biennial report on the state and development of concentration and competition in Germany. All indicators are reported at the level of 4-digit industries (WZ 2008/NACE Rev. 2). In addition to the concentration indicators, the dataset also includes the number of active firms and their aggregate turnover for each industry. |
